Feature flags saved our release velocity (and our sanity)
Product teams shipping risky changes to production
Big releases break things and fear slows shipping to a crawl
We used to ship on Tuesdays because Tuesdays were the least risky day to break things. That sentence should embarrass every engineering team, and it embarrassed us into changing. Feature flags transformed our release process. Code ships dark, flags flip on gradually: five percent of users, then twenty, then everyone. If metrics wobble, the flag flips back in seconds, no deploy needed. Our release cadence went from weekly to multiple times daily. And here is the part nobody predicts: quality went up. Small changes behind flags are easy to reason about and easy to reverse. The big scary Tuesday release was not a process. It was a confession.
